Why It’s Important To Be Your Own Health Advocate
I recently went for my annual physical. As we get older, this is super important since things like perimenopause and menopause (and “manopause” for the gentlemen) can shift our hormones, minerals and other aspects of our health.
As a recovering Type-A over-achiever, I pride myself on having an ideal resting heart rate, cholesterol and blood pressure. However, as we age, these attributes become tougher to hold on to. I’m happy to report my numbers are still spot on. However, my bloodwork revealed some deficiencies.
For reference, I take a multivitamin, extra Vitamin D and some perimenopause supplements. For a good 12-18 months, my joints have really been hurting. To the point where it would impact my workouts.
My bloodwork showed that I have a significant iron deficiency. I was actually somewhat relieved since this could be the culprit of my joint pain!
All this is to say, pay attention to what your body is telling you. Don’t ignore pain and be sure to regularly get your annual check-up. Preventative maintenance is key.
✅ Get a comprehensive blood panel to include hormones
✅ Track key numbers like blood pressure, heart rate and cholesterol
✅ Supplement accordingly and with your doctor’s guidance
✅ Keep moving your body
My husband’s cardiologist offered a great metaphor. Our bodies are similar to houses. When everything is brand new, it works great. However, as we get older, doors don’t close as well as they once did (he was comparing this to heart valves). All that said, regularly checking all major components will help keep things in working order.
