How to Slow Down Time

One minute you’re sipping your morning coffee, the next it’s Friday and you’re wondering where the week went. It’s also graduation season for many. As I celebrate my youngest child’s high school graduation, I wondered how it seems like it was only yesterday that I brought her home from the hospital…or she started kindergarten…and countless other milestones that seemed to fly by.

As we juggle work, family, responsibilities, and notifications, life can start to feel like a blur. But here’s the good news: you can slow down time — at least, the way you experience it. When we’re fully present, time feels expansive. When we’re distracted and on autopilot, it slips through our fingers.

This week, I’m sharing a few ways to stretch your moments, deepen your days, and make time feel a little less like it’s sprinting past.

🔑 5 Ways to Slow Down Time (That Actually Work)

1. Start with Stillness
Begin each day with just 2–5 minutes of stillness — no phone, no planning, no multitasking. Try a simple breathwork practice like the 4x4 method: inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4. Repeat 4 times.

📌 Why it works: It grounds your nervous system and helps you feel time instead of racing against it.

2. Do One Thing at a Time
Multitasking is a time thief. Practice monotasking: whether it’s drinking tea, writing an email, or taking a walk, do just that. Set a timer for 15–20 minutes and focus on one task.

📌 Try this: Use the phrase “Be here now” to gently bring yourself back to the moment.

3. Change Your Routine (Just a Little)
When everything feels the same, your brain compresses the memory — making time feel shorter. Shake up your week with a new walking route, a different grocery store, or lunch outside.

📌 Why it works: Novelty creates more memorable “time stamps” in your brain.

4. Savor the Transitions
We rush through the in-betweens — commuting, brushing teeth, waiting in line. Instead, treat those as mini moments to reset. Take a deep breath. Notice your surroundings. Feel your feet on the floor.

📌 Mantra: “This moment counts, too.”

5. Create a ‘Time Capsule’ Habit
At the end of each week, write down 3 things that happened — big or small. Something funny your child said, a great meal, a song you loved. It’s a weekly “snapshot” that helps you appreciate the passage of time.

📌 Bonus idea: Keep it in a dedicated journal or Notes app folder labeled “Time Well Spent.”

What made you feel most alive this week?
Pause. Reflect. Capture it. Then go do more of that.

For me, it was truly savoring the moment that my little girl received her diploma and hugging my husband as I whispered, “We’re doing a pretty good job.”

Remember: You can’t stop the clock, but you can stretch the moment. Time slows down when we pay attention. 💗
